Described in the Mail & Guardian as having 'a long-time interest in original music and genre combinations that stretch the definition of 'jazz', Shane Cooper is a South African bassist and composer who draws inspiration from years of collaborations with different groups in South Africa.

Based in Cape Town, Cooper has been a member of several groups at the forefront of the new jazz sound in South Africa including Babu, Restless Natives, the Kyle Shepherd Trio, and the Reza Khota Quartet. "An eclectic young musician who has rapidly emerged in the jazz world as first-call bassist for serious jazz" (Music Industry Online), he has worked as a sideman for many of the great South African band-leaders such as Zim Ngqawana, Feya Faku, and Louis Moholo-Moholo. This sideman work has resulted in performances at venues and festivals such as Bird's Eye Jazz Club (Basel, Switzerland), Fasching (Stockholm, Sweden), Park Jazz (Kortrijk, Belgium), Jazz Werkstatt Festival (Berne, Swizterland) and others.

In 2012 Shane was selected as the Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2013, and was also selected as one of Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans for 2013. The prestigious Standard Bank award gave Cooper the opportunity to lead his quintet in performances at the 2013 Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Grahamstown and the upcoming Joy of Jazz Festival in Johannesburg.
